MobyMag

About

Posted April 11th by Beaney in Uncategorized

MobyMag is a project launched and in 2008 – an online magazine which is made just for mobile phones. It began as a project run by Rachel Beaney, but has since been supported by various editors including Sarah Stanford and is now run by Jen Vermulen.

MobyMag can be accessed on the web, or on mobiles, by heading to mymobymag.mobi.

Since 93% of the world will access the internet for the first time on a mobile device* – it’s time to realise that we need to shift our thinking, and begin to put our big ideas in a small space: on a mobile screen.

Currently, the mobile market is traditionally the realm of big corporations, which is why Rachel set up MobyMag, to create a creative space for independant work, especially for youth.

As of May 2009, MobyMag has released ten issues, has published over 50 young Australian authours and has published over 60 articles.

Rachel has been recognised for her work in creating a space for mobile content and creativty. Recently, Rachel spoke at FISH@6 on Innovation and her experience creating MobyMag.

MobyMag is funded by Rachel as a side-project in order to promote independent media in mobile spaces.

How was it made?
MobyMag was originally coded by Rachel each month. In mid-2009 Rachel transferred her files to Wordpress, so users could get a more interactive web experience.

For small organisations or not-for-profits looking to create mobile projects and would like more detail about how they can set up mobile projects within their community, please contact Rachel.

Feedback or collaboration?

Rachel is always looking for ways to innovate MobyMag and find ways which users can create and share content on the move.

Please contact Rachel if you’ve got suggestions for ways MobyMag could innovate or better suit local communities.

If you think you’ve got a project that you think MobyMag would love get involved with, please send Rachel and email outlining your proposal.
